Song: Caught Without an Umbrella
Spearhead is headed up by Michael Franti, ex of the short-lived, early 90s intelligent / conscious rap act Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. A couple of years later he changes gears and forms a band called Spearhead, dropping the searingly incisive anger and generally opting for an approach more upbeat and soulful. But amidst the swells of positivity there are still some reverberating darker notes. In Caught Without an Umbrella, which closes out Spearhead's debut album Home, Franti softly narrates the tale of youngster teetering on the verge of manhood, wanting to chuck it all in and off himself… or does he? This quietly intense, largely restrained song’s emotional crescendo is marked by an absolutely massive guitar solo by Vernon Reid, the guitarist wizard from Living Colour - it’s brief but vividly expressive in one incendiary, continuous, liquid phrase.
