Band: Sylvan Esso
This collaborative duo out of South Carolina are up to something different. Singer/songwriter Amelia Meath of the Appalachian indie folk trio Mountain Man paired up with electronic producer Nick Sanborn (known in his solo work as Made of Oak) just last year; early this year they released their first full-length recording. Sanborn’s electro synth bleats and blips would be coolly clinical if they weren’t complemented by Meath’s charmingly organic, personable vocals. The result is an intriguing counterplay of disparate elements which somehow fuse together with a graceful economy.
There are no wasted gestures in the musical poem that is Coffee - each component feels as if it’s been chosen within a carefully constructed matrix of notes, cues and colours. A simmering warmth upholds the almost mathematical, minimalist electronica. Coffee’s quirkiness is lent gravitas by the stellar musicianship of both contributors. The sweetly understated video for the song unreels below - its narrative offers layers of commentary on society, love, ritual… and succeeds on its own terms.
