Vancouver-born Claire Elise Boucher, known to her fans as Grimes, is a hard act to pin down. However you choose to categorize her music, she is first and foremost a disciplined vocalist. Her voice is the primary instrument by which she constructs an impressive sonic architecture of intricately interlocking layers, laid over beds of cool electronica. Predecessors of such sumptuous and ambitious vocal layering include artists like Enya, The Cocteau Twins and Bjork. Genesis is from Grimes’ 2012 album Visions - watching the whimsical official video below it’s hard to separate the inventive, rich visuals - and the ironic toying with archetypal (stereotypical?) music video characters and tropes strewn throughout the decidedly lateral sequential flow - from the ethereal sounds she makes. The video smoothly mixes the earthy with the heavenly without making a definitive statement about either; Genesis is about fleeting impressions and elusive nuances.
