Song: I Feel My Stuff
Artist: David Byrne and Brian Eno
This twitchy little number - occasional playful but really quite dark - comes from 2008’s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. Eno and Byrne’s collaborative work as restless fellow travellers in musical explorations go back decades; they continue to challenge both each other and their legions of listeners. Eno provides the shimmering, taut arrangement and atmospheric sonics for this track, while Byrne’s daunting task is to furnish lyrics and compellingly deliver them.
By turns gently downtempo and steeped in fragility, I Feel My Stuff also packs sudden explosive punches. Against steep odds the dark, skittering paranoia and slinky kinetics of the piece resolve into a cohesive whole. The lyrics are nothing if not lateral and burn with mesmerizing luminosity; here Byrne is channeling his most bent (and keenly persuasive) muse. Not exactly an easy-listening tune but something vital all the same. Check out Byrne's live rendition in Montreal below - not the best sound quality, and for the full effect the studio recording is recommended - but Byrne's performance is electrifying and his theatrical sensibilities are very much in evidence.
