Song: Impossible Germany
In 2007 Chicago’s Wilco released Sky Blue Sky, thereby giving us this terrific, haunting song. It begins with eerie intertwined guitars before sliding into the moody, pensive body of the song in which lead vocalist Jeff Tweedy sings lyrics conveying ambivalence and uncertainty (I gather it’s about a love gone south). The song’s emotional centrepiece is the instrumental section which follows, highlighted by Nels Cline’s masterful guitar solo. YouTube offers up several live versions of this tune; in each one Cline is on fire. He begins slowly in a gentle downtempo vibe, then builds up to a frenetic climax as the band expertly shifts into a transcendent, triumphant phase before suddenly ushering in the same spooky motif which opened up the song. Brilliant. I think it’s meant to be best enjoyed live; maybe one day I’ll have the pleasure.
