Song: In My Bed
Artist: Amy Winehouse
I could have picked practically any song from Amy Winehouse’s brilliant second album Back to Black, but I chose to go back to her strong 2003 debut record Frank for this assured, sophisticated track. Its sound is smoothly contemporary: treated guitar phrases softly echoing in tandem with deft, R & B nuances - tiny repeating samples deftly clicking together and sliding beneath her gracefully fluid, utterly powerful voice.
And that video - Amy was hot, as befits this bold declaration of female sexual confidence. Her sleek, sultry presentation happily predates the more apparent effects of her personal road to ruin and the tragic ravages which would ensue.
Had Winehouse been able to successfully quell her demons, I wonder what a third full-length album of original material would have sounded like. No question, she was an original, top-tier talent, with a distinctive voice rivalling many a great who came before her. And that very fine second album is chock full of timeless cuts that became instant classics (having The Dap Kings as a backing band certainly didn’t handicap the singer either).
We'll never know now; Amy Winehouse joined the 27 club in the summer of 2011. If nothing else, she’s in good company.
