Song: Lazy Eye
Band: The Minotaurs
This vital little number is from the Toronto band’s 2010 debut album. Band leader and founder Nathan Lawr put together this ensemble confidently boasting elastic cohesion and grooves galore. Lawr’s deft keyboards and vocals mix with a crisp horn section, smoothly intermeshing guitars and a superb rhythm section holding it all down - in fact, it’s Kevin Lynn’s irrepressible bass on Lazy Eye which first hooked my ears. Right from the infectious bouncy piano riff which kicks it all off, this upbeat fable of a Cyclopean king is both sublimely fluid and relentlessly propulsive. A masterful pop tune with muscular verve, it really kicks in a live setting - an impressive wall of musos up on stage, cooking up a storm. Lawr has since relocated up to Sudbury and the Minotaurs, two albums in, are going strong.
