Band: King Cobb Steelie
This veteran Toronto band melds edgy alt-rock and deep dub in a uniquely funky gumbo. Frequently dark and ambivalent, often hard-charging and always richly atmospheric, the collective has seen many ups and downs over its quarter century of existence but they keep coming back with fresh material and reasons to gig live. This one’s from 1994’s Project Twinkle album and showcases this tight groups’s muscular energy and verve. The dense, propulsive rhythms, the deft interlocking guitar and a superbly present bass all come together in one focused song. The stark, soul-scraping delivery of lead singer Kevan Byrne provides a striking contrast to the incisive yet buoyant vibe expressed in the song’s main theme. A great intro to KCS. Check out the great live version from a gig last year “the Hammer” below.
