Song: Misery Is A Butterfly
Band: Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead is an American band on the wonderful 4AD label - the core band fronted by Kazu Makino, a striking Japanese American woman handling lead vocals, keys and rhythm guitar, with twin brothers Amadeo and Simone Pace (lead guitar and drums respectively). There’s a Canadian connection here; the Pace brothers were born in Milan but grew up in Montreal before moving on to Boston to study jazz. They’ve undergone a number of personnel changes but the triumvirate remains constant. So far they’re up to 8 albums and counting.
Misery is a Butterfly, from their well-received 2004 album of the same name, is trippy, unusual fare. Makino has this crazy-high voice and here it’s as if she’s recounting a dark, tragic fable. What an usual band. The more I hear these guys the more I want to devour their whole back catalogue. Really dig the drummer's sensibilities - crisp and commanding yet spare, almost martial. There’s a curious elegance to this mysterious song - check out the fan tribute video for it below.
