Song: My City Was Gone
This song was the B side to the 1982 breakout hit Back On The Chain Gang - I used to think it was called "Ohio." A fat bump-and-grind bass line right off the top sets the tone. It's a magnificent song brimming with confidence and a certain anthemic quality. Chrissie Hynde’s bleakly poignant take on returning to her hometown of Akron Ohio, years after she’d moved to London back in 1973, is a rock ’n roll classic. I’ve had the great fortune to see the Pretenders twice; in the live versions, the guitar solo break in the middle of the song is electrifying - last time I saw them here in Toronto I was moving and smiling like a madman. Check out the ultra-ballsy version below; lead guitarist Adam Seymour does wild things with his hollow-body axe and Chrissie still brings it, her voice as luminously singular and utterly riveting as ever. That the song has been co-opted by professionally bellicose American squawking head Rush Limbaugh in no way precludes the fact that it rocks, period. 'nuff said.
